MATERI SERVICING CLUTCHES

SERVICING CLUTCHES
OBJECTIVES
  1. Diagnose clutch-related problems.
  2. Inspect, adjust, replace clutch linkage.
  3. Inspect, adjust, repair, and replace clutch slave and master cylinders, & lines.
  4. Inspect, adjust, and replace release bearing lever, and pivot.
  5. Inspect and replace pressure plate. 
CLUTCH PROBLEM DIAGNOSIS
  1. The more information you have, the easier it is to properly diagnose it.
  2. Talk to the customer, ask questions.
  3. Road test the vehicle with the customer driving, if possible.
  4. Look for driving habits that cause failure.Listen carefully to changes in the noise.
TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE 
  1. Noises
  2. Binding
  3. Slippage
  4. Pulsation
  5. Chatter
CLUTCH SLIPPAGE 
  • Engine speed increases vehicle speed does not.
  • Slipping is caused by:
  1. Improper adjustment (too tight)
  2. Worn disc
  3. Contamination of the disc (oil)
  • Adjustment clearance decreases with disc wear.

CLUTCH CHATTER
  1. Clutch chatter is a shaking or shuddering.
  2. Clutch chatter is cause by:
  • Broken motor mounts
  • Glazed clutch disc
  • Worn U-joints
  • Worn pilot bushing
OTHER CLUTCH NOISES 

  1. Most clutch noises are caused by bearings and bushings.
  2. Bushings squeal or howl.
  3. Bearings grumble or grate.
  4. Misalignment is a common cause of clutch problems. 
CLUTCH VIBRATES
  1. Clutch vibration can occur at any clutch position.
  2. Can “feel” the vibration, and sometimes hear it also.
DRAGGING CLUTCH 

  1. Dragging results from the clutch not completely disengaging.
  2. Maximum spin down time 5 seconds.
  3. Dragging is caused by:

  • Warped disc or Pressure plate
  • Loose disc facing 
  • Incorrect clutch pedal adjustment 
 PULSATING CLUTCH PEDAL

  1. Pedal pulsation s a rapid up-and-down movement of the clutch pedal as the clutch engages or disengages.
  2. Pulsating is caused by:
  • Broken, bent, or warped release levers.
  • Misaligned bell housing.
  • Warped pressure plate, disc, or flywheel
